tuesday tune: "before my time" & the oscars

Happy snowy Tuesday! Did you watch the Oscars? Did you fall in love with Jennifer Lawrence like I did when she fell up the stairs? I love that she doesn't take herself so seriously (if you ask me - which you didn't - Anne Hathway needs to take note...). And what was with Kristen Stewart? Man did she ever look rough. Ugh. Anyways there is so much more to discuss, but since it's already been two days you are probably over it so I won't bore you.

I did however love the clip of the song "Before My Time" from the documentary Chasing Ice that was up for best original song, sung by Scarlett Johansson in her deep sultry voice. Such a pretty/sad song with music and lyrics by J. Ralph.

And now after the beautiful depressing song something to cheer you up, in case you haven't seen it Jennifer Lawrence's press conference post-Oscars:

And getting hit on by Jack Nicholson:

sidewalk citizen bakery

Hello, hello! It's me again. I used to blog here every once in a while. Remember? I hope you had a wonderful week, it's been busy here with a sick and teething baby. He's on the mend though, can't wait to have our happy baby back!

Just wanted to share with you our bounty from the amazing Sidewalk Citizen bakery this morning. Whole wheat sourdough, red pepper and onion scones (our love for Sidewalk Citizen started with our love for their scones, best. scones. ever), cauliflower chickpea dip, a meringue, and a dark chocolate brownie with white chocolate ganache and Grand Marnier. Um, can you say yum??! If you're in Calgary chances are pretty good that you've heard of the artisan bakery, but if somehow you haven't...you need to check it out. Even if you, like me, are trying to get back into shape and eat healthily, you should go. Because, life is too short not to enjoy some high quality baked delights on the weekend. You work hard all week, right? Time to eat carbs and treat yo'self.

Going to Sidewalk Citizen feels a bit like you're in that scene from Beauty and the Beast, when Belle is in the town square and there is a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker (or something like that). Everyone who works there is so friendly, and Aviv and his wife get to know their customers and obviously LOVE what they do. The only difference is that this isn't a cartoon, and it's not in a cute french town square. Remember when people used to get there bread from bakeries instead of costco? I don't. But I know people used to do that. I wish that there was a bakery like this in walking distance from my home. Actually, on second thought maybe I don't, because there's no way I could resist the temptation on a daily basis.

Artisan breads, danishes, croissants, sweet and savoury scones, pizza, sandwiches, cheese sticks, and more, more, so much more. What you don't see in the above picture is the sandwich we had for lunch - cauliflower, goat cheese, and mint were the main ingredients and it was de-lish...cauliflower in a sandwich you say? I know, I thought it might be too weird too, but they made a believer out of me. The flavours and ingredients of their goods change daily, so you never know what you will get, which is part of the fun, don't you think? They just opened up a bakery deli in Sunnyside (all information is here) and the main bakery is off of Macleod trail. I get a little lost every time we go there...but I still go, and drive halfway across the city to boot, so you know it must be good!

PS - you may not know that you know sidewalk citizen, but Aviv's breads and baked goods are in hip joints all across the city (Phil & Sebastian's is where we discovered the scones), so look out for the name when you're out and about - I promise you won't be disappointed.

PPS - if you're on the twitter, follow @Avivfried for the daily flavours and enticing photos that will make you drive across the city too...

tuesday tune: tegan and sara - goodbye, goodbye

So, the posting has died off a bit...I finally have a baby who sleeps through the night (and naps!! knock wood that this delightful turn of events continues), but I just have not found the energy to write. As it is right now it's 8:30 and I'm seriously considering closing the computer, turning off the light and passing out. I'm also realizing as I write this that sleep has been mentioned in almost every post that I have written, ever. I apologize. I'm a little obsessed, and I promise to stop writing about it. What. A. Bore.

Not a bore though is the new album Heartthrob by Tegan and Sara. Yay! They're back! I have been listening to these homegrown twins forever and ever (this is album #7) and once again they don't disappoint. This feels a little 80's, it's super catchy and I am a fan. Perfect music to stick on while you're madly cleaning/cooking/dancing around the house...(which is what I spent my day doing, prepping for my brother's b-day dinner - Happy Birthday brother!).

You can listen to the whole album on their website, but here's my favourite - Goodbye, Goodbye:

If the vid isn't working (there's issues for some reason...go here)

be mine valentine

Happy Valentines Day to my three boys at home! Love love love them - so much love I can barely handle it. What are your plans for V-day? We used to take Valentines day very seriously with elaborate dates and thoughtful gifts. Any excuse to celebrate something we are usually in! This year though our big plans are to order in pizza and try not to fall asleep while we watch a movie. Oh the romance. Still though, I'm looking forward to it, and it's not what you do, but who you do it with...right?

Sidenote...I got my Valentine's Day gift a day early. You guessed it...a golden Elk head! Apparently Jordan reads the blog and knew I was in the market for an animal head to place on our wall. Unfortunately, it looks ridiculous and we both agree it has to go back to where it came from (the forest of Urban Barn). BUT the search is still on. I think we will look for a silver one instead.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your loves!

XO

tuesday tune - dillon, thirteen thirtyfive

Happy Tuesday!

I'm up earlllllly at 6 am (I know, all you people who work everyday probably feel really sorry for me right about now, right?). Trying to savour an hour of quiet before Wes wakes up. We are in the middle of sleep training, and I'm actually starting to get sleep. I feel like I could run a marathon this morning, or write a novel, or something. Actually that's not true at all, I'm just as tired as I usually am, which doesn't seem fair considering I was only woken up by a crying baby once last night and he put himself back to sleep (success!!). Then again, it probably takes more than a couple nights of decent sleep to recover from 6 months of night-time torture. Anyways, I'm babbling. All I really wanted to do was post a song. It's kind of a sad song, which doesn't at all relate to how I'm feeling this morning, but she has a great voice. There's also a crazy debate in the comments about what the song is about. I love youtube debates, people are so feisty.

coconutty coconut cake

In my experience, you either love coconut, or you hate it. In this house we are coconut lovers (if you are not, no need to read any further, it's all about the coconut from here). After searching through coconut cake recipes for Jordan's birthday yesterday, I settled on the one that seemed be the most "coconutty", a Martha Stewart recipe. And thank you Martha, Queen of All Things Baked. Yum! This recipe is moist and full of coconutty goodness (although a little warning for you crazies that don't like sugar, it is very sweet). It is so good, I am eating another piece as I type this.

This cake also looks pretty, and even though I attempted many times to screw it up, it turned out to be fairly foolproof. Lately, my baking adventures have been a bit of a disaster and this was no exception. While I was pregnant I blamed pregnancy brain, and now that Westley's born I still blame him. The poor kid gets blamed for a lot around here. So to avoid making the mistakes I did, here are a couple of tips... tip #1 is don't forget to put the coconut in the coconut cake. But the good news is that if you've got the batter perfectly mixed and poured into pans and then notice the coconut sitting lonely on the counter you can mix it back into the cake with no damage done. Tip #2 don't stress too much about the icing; you cover it all up with toasted coconut which would make anything look pretty.

Speaking of icing, I chose to make a vegan frosting that is made with coconut oil instead of butter (truthfully because I ran out of butter and didn't have enough eggs to make the suggested frosting in the Martha recipe). This frosting is good! And it's almost healthy - other than the 6 cups of icing sugar that is. I think this will be my new go to frosting recipe, that's how good it is.

Anyways, enough of an intro. Here's the recipe:

Martha's Coconut Cake
Martha Stewart

1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temp
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pans
1 tbsp plus 1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup caked, sweetened, shredded coconut
2 2/3 cups sugar
4 large whole eggs, plus 4 large egg whites
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut milk

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter two 9 inch x 2 inch round cake pans; line bottoms with parchment rounds. Butter parchment and sides and dust with flour, tapping out excess; set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Place shredded coconut in bowl of a food processor; pulse until finely chopped. Stir coconut into flour mixture until combined; set aside.

3. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes, scraping down the side of the bowl as needed. Add whole eggs, egg white, and vanilla; beat until fluffy and combined. With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture, alternating with the coconut milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture, mixing well after each addition.

4. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans; smooth with an offset spatula. Bake, rotating pans halfway through, until cakes are golden brown a toothpick comes out clean, about 55 minutes.

5. Transfer pans to a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes. Invert cakes onto rack; peel off parchment paper. Reinvert cakes and let them cool completely, top sides up.

6. Using a serrated knife, trim tops of the cake layers to make level (and then quickly devour the extra bits because they are soooo tasty). Place one layer on a cake plate, and spread top with 1 and 1/2 cups frosting (recipe below). Top with remaining layer, cut side down. Using an offset spatula, spread remaining frosting over entire cake. Sprinkle cake with toasted coconut.

Coconut Frosting
Chef Chloe

2 cups coconut oil
6 cups icing sugar
2 tsp vanilla
4-10 tbsp coconut milk (or other milk)
2 cups toasted coconut (I used sweetened, but unsweetened would be good as the frosting is already sweet)

1. Beat coconut oil with mixer until smooth (this part is key, I screwed up here and added the icing sugar before the coconut oil was smooth and it was hard to get a smooth consistency).

2. Add icing sugar and vanilla.

3. Add milk 1 tbsp at a time until desired consistency is reached.

4. Beat on high for 2 more minutes until light and fluffy.

Let me know what you think if you get a chance to try it! Or come over tomorrow for a slice, because as good as it is (and even with my appetite for sweets) it is way too much for two people.

Also if you've read this far, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to that amazing guy I married almost 5 years ago, you really are the best.

westley's week (and a half...) in photos

So...I meant to post this on the weekend, then on Monday, then Tuesday...then this morning and finally, (lucky you) now! It's been busy around here, and if at all possible I am even more sleep deprived than usual so I will keep the writing to a minimum (also lucky you!).

We went to the zoo, Westley had a blast (can't you tell?).

And the park, peekaboo!

First eye check-up with Dr. Blow.

Westley looooves Lex and wishes Lex loved him back.
Sadly not sure if that will ever happen, this is about as close as Lex is willing to get.

Westley has started army crawling and getting into trouble. Luckily he's still slow...

This was a stool someone in my office made as a gift for Westley, how lucky is he? He knows it.

Hope you're having a fabulous night! I'm going to watch House of Cards and go to bed at 8.

pura vida: the good life

In Costa Rica there is a way of living referred to as "Pura Vida". It is a belief that life is short, so we shouldn't take it too seriously. Instead, we should relax and see the beauty that's all around us and appreciate the positive. It is a way of living that celebrates even our smallest good fortune and it could be why the people who live this way have been called the happiest people on the planet. Doesn't it sound like a beautiful way to experience the world?

Today I'm remembering someone very special who believed in the good life and I'm trying to remember to do the same.

six great online design mags

TGIF! So excited for the weekend. True, every day is kind of like the weekend for me these days, but the weekend means Jordan is home, yay!...In preparation for the weekend, I thought I would round up some great design and lifestyle mags that you can read Saturday morning with a cup of coffee (or 3). I am a magazine hoarder, and I have an assortment of subscriptions I pay for, but these are free and some of them are even better than the ones I buy. Do you read any online mags?

Rue (monthly)
As I mentioned in the post about Rue Daily, this is my fave online magazine. They feature style, design, recipes, entertaining ideas and great blogs...it is chock full of inspiring and beautiful things!

Adore (bimonthly)
An Australian online mag that "invites you to inspirational homes, looks at the latest products on the market and whisks you away to gorgeous holiday destinations" (taken from their website). Beautiful, bright and modern!

Lonny (bi-monthly)
One of the very best, if not the best. Lonny was created by a couple of staff members from the late and amazing Domino magazine. It is full of unique and beautiful interiors and lifestyle features. Love love love it! Such high quality it's hard to believe it's free.

Sweet Paul (quarterly)
A magazine based on the very popular blog of the same name that has beautiful ideas for entertaining, crafts, recipes, travel, etc.

Est (quarterly)
Another Australian publication that takes "a relaxed and stylish view, showcasing some of the worlds best homes, interiors, fashion, luxury goods, travel and lifestyle" (taken from their website)

91 Magazine (quarterly)
This UK based mag is new to me, but it has great style tips, design, crafts with a vintage-y twist.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
